Milestones

The Nur Association was founded in 2007 by the late Ibrahim Jarba'ah. Jarba'ah earned both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education at the University of Beer Sheva.

His professional career began as a teacher in a primary school in Segev Shalom, one of the permanent Bedouin settlements in the Negev. He eventually was promoted to principal of the school and also served as Director of Community Education. Under his leadership, the school became the largest in the Bedouin society. At its peak it had 850 students, an achievement unmatched in the Negev as well as in Bedouin society.

Jarba'ah's intellect and character proved him a natural leader, and he had served as a model for many Bedouins to seek higher education. Jarba'ah was a consummate educator. He chose this profession so that he could impart his knowledge to other Bedouins.

After a chance meeting with the parents of a blind boy, who was not accepted into a regular educational framework, Jarba'ah decided to integrate the boy into his school with equal access to all the resources afforded the other children.

With this experience, Jarba'ah saw that a blind child can learn in an ordinary classroom setting, just as non-blind students learn. The guiding principle – to integrate blind children into his school – led to the incorporation of 30 other blind children into the school within a year. Using innovative tools, accessories and technologies, the school became a center of knowledge for the blind.  It continues to be a magnet for educating blind Bedouins.

Jarba'ah's method was modeled after the technique used in the A.D. Gordon School in Tel-Aviv He brought in many professionals with experience in working with the blind to the community, incorporating them into the local councils and education and welfare offices.

Jarba'ah's accomplishments were so effective that at the end of primary school, blind children were integrated into regular Junior High and High schools in their community.

The Association was also designed to facilitate securing sufficient resources to realize Jarba'ah's vision of educating the blind.
